Saturday Morning Wrestling I – February 5th, 2011

Some of my earliest memories of wrestling involved anxiously waiting for Jem to go off so that I could kick my sister out of the living room and watch Bret Hart or Sting save the day. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, we can not just relive those moments, but do so with different, new wrestling from all over the world. Here’s the first installment of Dirty Dirty Sheets’ Saturday Morning Wrestling.

AJW – Takako Inoue vs. Mima Shimoda: Part 1 Part 2

We start off a classic match from two Joshi legends in 1992. Zenjo, better known in the us as AJW, was one of the greatest promotions in history. It’s consistent delivery of the best wrestling, regardless of gender, has rarely if ever been surpassed. Astonishingly both of these wrestlers still compete regularly, and are just as great:

DDT – Kota Ibushi vs. YOSHIHIKO

A Japanese friend of mine said it best, “We love going to DDT because they always make us laugh.” Brace yourself for absurdist comedy wrestling done to perfection with two of Japan’s most talked about Independent wrestling artists:

WRESTLE-1 – Katsuyori Shibata vs. Jun Akiyama Part 1 Part 2

Now for something a bit more serious, the young, surly former New Japan bad ass take’s on an AJPW/NOAH legend. Shibata left Pro Wres to become an MMA fighter several year’s ago, but with not much success. With the JMMA scene in a bit of trouble now would be a great time for him to return to his first home and start wrecking shop again:

SMASH – Kovac’s Secret Weapon

Everything about SMASH is fun, including the promos. They a great job bringing in foreign talent, often from places where people don’t even know there’s wrestling. Here’s Austria’s Michael Kovac hyping his match for SMASH 14. Bonus points to whoever can pick out the background music:

ACW – Akira Tozawa vs LaMotta (c) vs Dingo vs Vega vs Jay vs Electro (Anarchy Televised Championship)

Now we come to a wild 6-Man for ACW’s Anarchy Televised Championship. It features the Aussie Dingo, the Dragon Gate sensation Akira Tozawa, and a robot that may or may not be in a relationship with Portia Perez. ACW’s next show is next weekend in San Antonio. I plan on being there to see Tozawa team with the equally amazing ACH, and to see Rachel and Jessica’s Excellent Tag Team deliver more than a few stacks of paincakes:

WAVE – Toshie Uematsu & Ran Yu Yu vs. Michiko Omukai & Yumi Ohka – Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

CHIKARA recently announced that Toshie Uematsu as the next Joshi legend they’d be bringing in. She’ll be in Williamsport, PA on March 12th and Brooklyn, NY on March 13th. I’ll be making the trip, check this and see why you should as well:

Oz Academy – Takako Inoue vs. Ayumi Kurihara

And just a bit more Joshi to close us out. Takako Inoue again, this time taking on Ayumi Kurihara. Ayumi is currently lining up to be Joshi’s next big thing, and was just announced to be returning to Chicago for SHIMMER’s next tapings on March 26th and 27th:
